Why one K-pop album has five versions — photocards, POBs, and the buy-multiples trap

The CD is identical across versions. What differs is the photobook and the random photocard inside — and that, plus store-specific pre-order benefits, is the entire reason fans buy five.

The thing that baffles new fans: the same album, released the same day, exists in four or five "versions" — and the music is identical in all of them. The tracklist and the CD are the same. So what are you actually paying for, and why do fans buy more than one?

What actually differs between versions

Between versions, what changes is the packaging and the inclusions: a different photobook, different posters, and — the big one — a random photocard (a small collectible card of one member) pulled from a set. The CD content is the same.

So a "version" is really a different photobook + a shot at a different photocard, not different music.

Photocards: the real economy

Each version comes with a randomly inserted photocard. In a group of, say, eight members, you might want your bias's card and pull someone else's. This creates a whole secondary economy:

  • Fans buy multiples hoping to pull their bias, or to trade duplicates.
  • Trading and reselling photocards is huge; rare or first-press cards command real money.
  • This is, bluntly, the mechanic that turns "one album" into "I bought six."

POB: pre-order benefits (and why the store matters)

POB = Pre-Order Benefit — an extra item (usually an exclusive photocard, sometimes a poster or sticker) you get only if you pre-order, and only during the pre-order window. The catch that trips up international fans:

  • Each store gives a different POB. The same album pre-ordered from Weverse Shop might include POB "A," while Yes24 gives POB "B" and Ktown4u gives POB "C."
  • POBs are only available during pre-order and become hard to get (and pricey on resale) after release.
  • So which store you pre-order from determines which exclusive card you get — which is why fans care so much about the where-to-pre-order question.

Why this feeds everything else

Multiple versions + random photocards + store POBs are the machine that drives mass pre-ordering, which front-loads first-week sales and feeds the music-show scoring. It's not an accident — it's the economic engine of the whole comeback.

Last verified: July 2026. Version counts and POB structures vary by group and release; the CD-identical, packaging-and-photocard-different pattern is the constant.
